OSS Discovery: Take Inventory of Installed Open Source

OSS Discovery is an open source software tool that helps enterprises identify the open source software installed on their workstations and servers. OSS Discovery finds over 1,000 of the most commonly used open source software packages.

OSS Discovery enables enterprises to easily take inventory of installed open source software. By taking inventory of open source, enterprises are better able to:

Develop support and maintenance plans

Comply with open source licenses

Measure and communicate the benefits of open source software

Find opportunities to use more open source software

Features and Benefits

OSS Discovery provides these unique capabilities:

An accurate inventory of the open source software used in your enterprise is critical for governance of open source software because it allows you to find the software which has bypassed traditional procurement processes.

Auditing open source software in the context enterprise policies improves compliance and increases awareness of governance measures, which in turn leads to lower risk and increased license compliance.

Aggregated enterprise reports provide visibility of the open source software being used across the enterprise. This allows for improved decision making around governance and enterprise architecture.

Scheduling regular scans ensures ongoing compliance with the policies governing the use of open source software in the enterprise. OSS Discovery is easily scheduled with any of the leading scheduling tools.

Filtering specific directories or drives out of a scan eliminates reporting noise that can be caused by developer sandboxes.

The OSS Discovery Community and the Open Source Census

OpenLogic developed OSS Discovery in order to help enterprises easily take inventory of installed open source software. OSS Discovery is open source software released under GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL). We welcome participation in the OSS Discovery community.

In addition to helping enterprises take inventory of open source, OSS Discovery is used to contribute data to The Open Source Census—a global, collaborative project to collect and share quantitative data on the use of open source software in the enterprise. OSS Discovery allows participants to anonymously contribute scan reports that enumerate the open source software they use. Once scan reports have been submitted, participants can visit the Census website to review their own open source inventory as well as benchmark data that shows how they compare to others with similar demographics.
