Open Source Statistics

Open Source Adoption and Influence Continue to Grow

A recent eWeek.com article cited statistics on open source adoption and influence that were presented at the 2007 Gartner Open Source Summit in Las Vegas. According to the article, the statistics presented by Gartner research director Laurie Wurster indicate that open source adoption--as well as its influence on the broader software market--continues to grow. "Gartner declared open-source software the biggest disruptor the software industry has ever seen and postulated it will eventually result in cheaper software and new business models." The article continues, "Open-source products accounted for a 13 percent share of the $92.7 billion software market in 2006, but should account for 27 percent of the market in 2011 when revenue is expected to be $169.2 billion."

Survey Summary

Date: September 2007
Audience: U.S. and European software users
Number of Responses: 295
Source: Gartner presented the survey results at the 2007 Gartner Open Source Summit in September. The eWeek.com article did not cite the dates during which the survey was conducted.
Conclusion: The survey statistics reported by eWeek.com indicate that open source usage will continue to grow in the U.S. and Europe over the coming year while usage of commercial and proprietary software will shrink. Although the survey indicated a nearly even split between open source usage in mission-critical and non-mission-critical situations, OpenLogic expects the balance to shift towards mission-critical deployments as open source adoption continues to rise.
