Proprietary Software Credits Exchange Guide.

Posted by Brad Reeves on April 1st, 2008 in Open Source Trends

As promised by my previous post, here is the basic exchange guide for proprietary software credits.

Each OS manufacturer is assigned a base value, to that we add the proprietary footprint of the OS they provide.
Notes on some OS's are provided. If the OS was particularly difficult on the user, then the overall cost is higher.

If the manufacturer has spread FUD about Open Source, they are taxed additionaly. Apple you will notice has a higher
than average credit price because they fall in the "wolf in sheeps clothing" arena. They create a product "based" on
open source but are not open source. They are a factory churning out smugness with every shiny powerMac and sleek iMac
like corn through a goose. Microsoft, also deserves additional taxation due to the FUD, and for churning out the
"blue screen of death" at an unprecedented rate.

This is just the OS credit exchange, there are some software packages that need to be added as time permits.
Microsoft Office springs to mind. There should be some special level of credit hell for anyone who has ever used
excel as a programming environment rather than a spreadsheet application.. I will have to work on how that will be handled.

These cost are per system. So if you have multiple computers, you need to add up all the values. If you are a corporation
looking to offset your proprietary footprint then bulk rates may apply. Just drop me a line and I will work it out with you.

If you find any holes, or additional software that should be placed on the list, or have a discrepancy with any of the cost
let me know. Any additional comments to the list are welcome.

  1. Looks like “smugness” is more expensive than mere “proprietariness,” which is maybe reasonable. But oughtn’t there, then, to be smugness charges even for Open Source products, where applicable?

  2. Good point, Jack, on the smugness quotient. Brad (aka – Big Blue), I’ll put a smug-piggy bank next to my gorgeous 24″ iMac, of which you are insanely jealous, so you can salve your conscience and reduce your smugness footprint. We’ll use the proceeds to buy black turtlenecks for angry freetards and restore a sense of childlike wonder to all.

    Namaste, Big Blue.

  3. Being smug and proprietary is the worst possible combination. With open source smugness, you have the code, and if you so wish you can fork the project to a less smug alternative. I completly agree that there are several open source projects that need to be taken down a notch on the smugness level. Hmmmm, once I have the credit program running smoothly, I will work at addressing it.

As to my insane jealousy of Landons 24″ iCrack, it would look good with Kubuntu running on it, however the black turtleneck would give me a rash.

  4. So, I need to get a price-check on the configuration that I’m using. This “turducken” setup has really been bothering my soul and I hope you can help me:

I’m regularly using Mac OS X Leopard running VMWare Fusion within which is running Windows XP which is running VMWare Workstation which is running Windows 2K, Microsoft Office and IIS.

Since it’s all on one machine, I am hoping that I only have to pay you for Leopard credits.

  5. Landon,

    Ok… You would need to pay the Apple base charge. ( $5.00 ), the Leopard charge ( $8.00), the Microsoft charge ( $9.00 ) the XP charge ($3.00 ) and the 2K charge ( $3.00 ) = $27.00

You only have to pay a single Windows charge for the two OS’s..

I still need to come up with the proprietary application charge sheet, so the MS Office, and IIS charges are yet to come.

IIS – geez! Cmon Landon, apache will run just fine on that system..

    $27 – to the Open Source Community.. ( so far… )

  6. Wow, just $27 to assuage my guilt. This is such a great service you’re providing. Now, how often do I get to pay that $27 or is it a one-time charge? I would like to have a receipt and a badge that I can put on my web site so no one else black-mails me into paying again.

  7. Landon, Landon, Landon,

It is not to just “assuage” your guilt, of which based on your usage must be very high indeed. Rather, this program is a pathway for you to give back to the open source Community that has so richly blessed your computing life. Think beyond the shiny iCrack, and the gleaming icons on your OSX desktop, to the programs that help you day in and day out. VIM, ruby, rails, netbeans, eclipse, etc, etc, etc…

I think that this would be a one time charge for the OS’s, until the next version of OSX 10.6 comes out ( Polecat? ) and you feel the need to upgrade.

A receipt, a website logo, and a personalized certificate would be sent to you once your “donation” is received.

I appreciate your comments as they further illuminate the just cause that is the Proprietary Software Credit system… ( Go Blue!! )
