European and US governments preferring open source these days
In my blog reader, one right after the other:
- EU "Will Prefer Open Source Software" by Glyn Moody which pointed to EU: European Commission to increase its use of Open Source.
- US Navy's new policy: Only open source by Matt Asay which pointed to Navy to focus only on open systems.
Interestingly enough neither group gave public ownership or any ideological motivations as a reason. The EU said their motivation was interoperability and open standards to support interoperability and the Navy gave cost and functionality as their primary motivators.
