LinuxWorld talk available on line
At LinuxWorld this year I gave a talk called How Global 2000 Companies Are Addressing Open Source Legal Concerns. It was a fun talk (for me) because the audience was really interested and they not only asked lots of questions but a couple of them also provided some interesting anecdotes afterwards. I talked about:
- Where and how open source enters a large company.
- I gave a couple of examples of all of the licenses and legal work that should happen for just one developer to use just one project. (And all of its dependencies!)
- What companies are currently doing about open source software policies.
- Why the attorneys are worried about open source software.
- Legal Myths. I run into these in just about every conversation about open source software and legal issues.
- Licensing. I find that many people new to open source see the licenses as an amorphous blob – I think it helps to call out the basic categories that licenses fall into.
- What other companies are doing. (I know – this is what the whole talk was supposed to be about but we needed some background!) Things like review boards and policies fall into this section.
