You have heard of the licenses, but do you know which ones are considered "permissive" and which ones are "copyleft" and why? Do you understand these licenses when it comes to using them and complying with them?

This webinar will take a few of the more commonly found OSS licenses and examine such issues as:

  • What do these licenses actually say and how are they interpreted by the community?

  • What does it mean to comply?

  • Where are the sticking points that may be overlooked or are open for interpretation?

  • Is there reliable external information or references to help interpret the licenses and how do I find it?

Join us Nov. 30 at 2 pm EST as OpenLogic's inside counsel, Jilayne Lovejoy, walks you through a few of the most common open source licenses including the Apache Software License 2.0 and the General Public License v2. This webinar is geared toward attorneys, developers and business people who have a basic knowledge of OSS licenses and compliance and are looking to educate themselves on the specifics of OSS licenses. Whether you're interested in a deeper understanding for compliance reasons or need to determine what license you may want to use for your own code, this webinar will provide answers to your open source licensing questions.

Register here for the 60-minute discussion.

Feel free to submit questions prior to the webinar by tweeting us your questions @openlogic and including the hashtag #OLwebinar.

4 Fascinating Stats from the Android Developers Conference II in San Francisco

The highly anticipated Android Developers Conference II, kicked off in San Francisco this week, and for the second time this year OpenLogic had an opportunity to speak with Android developers about their use of open source software.

As we head into 2012 and an uncertain economy, the interest in cost savings and the flexibility that open source provides, has resulted in an unprecedented increase in the adoption of open source software within the enterprise and in mobile apps.

OpenLogic conducted a survey here at the Android Developers Conference, and found that 61% of Android developers use open source software in their Android apps. However, we also discovered that 73% of respondents had no compliance process or were unsure if one existed in their organization, and 28% said that they did not audit for open source software at all.

This data is consistent with the research that OpenLogic conducted in March of 2011. In the research, OpenLogic scanned 635 leading mobile applications for open source components and evaluated their compliance with the relevant open source licenses. The research results that 71% of Android™, iPhone® and iPad® apps containing open source failed to comply with basic open source license requirements.

As the adoption of OSS in the enterprise continues to grow, so to does the interest in governance and compliance in both formal and informal solutions. Of those surveyed at the conference this week, 20% said that they use either their own scanning tools or commercial scanning tools.

OpenLogic provides enterprises with open source support, scanning, provisioning and governance solutions to safely and efficiently leverage open source software. OpenLogic also gives enterprises the choice, confidence, and control necessary to mitigate open source risks while maximizing cost savings.
